Exercise-induced anterior tibial compartment compression syndrome in the elderly.

چکیده
Introduction A compartmental syndrome is defined as a condition in which elevated pressure in an osteofascial compartment produces dysfunction or necrosis of the enclosed tissues (Matsen, 1975). The anterior tibial compartment (ATC) is surrounded by dense fibrous tissue, bone and interosseous membrane forming a rigid boundary, thus making raised pressure especially likely to be damaging. The ATC contains the extensors of the foot and toes, the deep peroneal nerve and the anterior tibial blood vessels and pressure damage to these structures produces the clinical picture of the ATC compression syndrome. A raised ATC pressure may be due to vascular occlusion, exercise, trauma or other causes (Bradley, 1973). ATC compression following exercise is a syndrome occurring mostly in young males (Bradley, 1973). It has not previously been reported from an elderly female.

Anterior tibial compartment syndrome following femoral artery perfusion. Four patients are described who developed the anterior tibial compartment syndrome following open heart surgery. It occurred in the limb used for femoral artery perfusion in each patient. In two it was known that the collateral circulation to the limb was also considerably impaired. It is suggested that prolonged limb isch...

The anterior tibial syndrome is well known. It was described by Vogt in 1943 and numerous reports have since been published (Horn 1945; Hughes 1948; Carter, Richards and Zachary 1949; Blandy and Fuller 1957; Paton 1968). The etiology of the condition remains obscure but the clinical features are well recognised : gradually increasing pain in the muscles of the anterior tibial compartment, begin...
متن کاملChronic Exercise-Induced Leg Pain in Active People.
In brief "Shin splints" is a catchall term for any kind persistent exercise-related lower leg pain with no obvious cause. Such pain can originate from a number of conditions, such as medial tibial stress syndrome, stress fracture, compartment syndrome, vascular pathology, nerve entrapment, and others. A methodical work-up designed to detect problems in all anatomic structures from bone to skin ...
متن کاملFluoroscopic analysis of anterior tibial translation during eccentric and concentric phase of knee rehabilitation exercises in men with anterior cruciate ligament injury
Background: The amount of anterior tibial translation during rehabilitation exercises is a key factor in organizing exercise regimen after anterior cruciate ligament injury. Excessive anterior tibial translation could increase the magnitude of tension imposed on injured and reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament knees. Forward lunge and open-kinetic knee extension exercises are commonly used ...
متن کاملExercise induced compartment syndrome in a professional footballer.
Recurrent pain in the lower leg caused by exercise is a common problem in athletes. The main causes are exercise induced compartment syndrome, periostitis of the tibia, stress fracture, venous diseases, obliterative arterial diseases, and shin splints. Exercise induced compartment syndrome is the least common. A recurrent tightening or tense sensation and aching in anatomically defined compartm...
